On December 16 2025, the Bexar County Commissioners Court approved a $500,000 pilot housing assistance program designed to help renters in unincorporated areas of the county who are at risk of eviction. The initiative focuses on keeping families in their homes by providing financial support for past-due rent, first month’s rent, and security or utility deposits through a partnership with Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of San Antonio. Payments will be made directly to landlords to help stabilize tenancies for eligible households.
This pilot program is targeted to residents who live outside the City of San Antonio and cannot access the city’s rental assistance programs. It prioritizes households with incomes at or below 80 percent of the area median income and those facing imminent displacement. County officials estimate that the initial funding could assist approximately 150 families as part of this initial effort, making a meaningful difference for residents feeling the squeeze of rising housing costs and the growing number of eviction filings across the county.
Judge Peter Sakai and fellow Commissioners emphasized the importance of local action to fill gaps in housing support. By stepping in where other programs do not reach, Bexar County is helping ensure that more families have a chance to stay in their homes during challenging times. The funding comes from the county’s Housing Finance Corporation, and future expansion or continuation of this program will depend on discussions in Commissioners Court and the needs identified in the community.
